Work is nearing completion to enable hospital clinicians across all four north west London acute trusts to issue electronic fit notes (eMED3). The project is being delivered by the North West London Acute Provider Group in partnership with Oracle Health (Cerner), and input from GP leads through an ICB stakeholder group.

The initiative aims to simplify the fit note process and support more joined-up care between hospitals and general practice. Once a hospital clinician completes the digital form, the fit note will be available through the London Care Record for clinical access and the Care Information Exchange for patients. Printed copies will also remain available where needed.

The technical solution has been completed and is undergoing information governance assurance. Pilot testing is expected to begin this autumn in:

  • trauma and orthopaedics fracture clinics at London Northwest University Healthcare and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital
  • general surgery at The Hillingdon Hospitals
  • cardiac interventions and gynaecology at Imperial College Healthcare.

A wider rollout will be informed by learning from the pilot sites.
