Update on Medicines Supply Notification: Clenil Modulite® (beclometasone dipropionate) 50mcg and 250mcg inhalers

WNL WIDE

The Department of Health and Social Care has released a medicine supply notification (MSN) to confirm that Clenil Modulite® 50 microgram and 250 microgram beclometasone inhalers are being discontinued in the UK. Final supplies are expected in October 2026, with remaining stock likely to be exhausted by mid-November 2026.

Please note that Clenil Modulite® 100 microgram and 200 microgram strength inhalers are not affected by the discontinuation and will remain available.

Actions for prescribers

  • Prescribers should not initiate new patients on the Clenil Modulite® 50 microgam and 250 microgram strength inhalers
  • Practices should identify affected patients and review treatment at the next appropriate clinical opportunity, preferably before the end of October 2026, to avoid disruption and establish suitable alternatives.

Following consultation with respiratory clinicians across west and north London, Soprobec® will be added to local formularies, and local asthma guidelines are being updated to reflect the recommendation of Soprobec® as a suitable alternative to the discontinued Clenil Modulite® 50 micrograms and 250 microgram strength inhalers.

Due to the overlap between the Summary of Product Characteristics (SmPC) for Clenil Modulite® 50 microgram and Clenil Modulite® 100 microgram strength inhalers, with regards to therapeutic indication, dosage and method of administrations. The recommendation for patients using Clenil Modulite® 50 microgram are to be considered to change to Clenil Modulite® 100 microgram where clinically appropriate.

The north central London Children’s Asthma inhaler choice guidelines recommend the following for children using Clenil Modulite® 50 microgram inhaler:

  • five years and above: consider switching to an equivalent Clenil Modulite® 100 microgram dose inhaler.
  • five years and below: consider switching to Soprobec® 50 microgram inhaler as the second line option where Clenil Modulite® 100 microgram is not suitable.

To note that Soprobec® inhalers lack a dose counter, and it is important that patients are given advice on how to keep track of doses used to ensure adherence to treatment as well as timely requests for repeat prescriptions.

Clinicians should refer to MSN/2026/038 available via the Specialist Pharmacy Service Medicines Shortage Tool (registration and log in required) for the full supporting information including further details of recommended prescriber actions and suitable alternatives.

ScriptSwitch® and OptimiseRx messages have been enabled to support primary care.
